Overview
Established in 1891, The University of Oklahoma is internationally known for the high quality of its faculty, students, and academic programs. The University attracts students from every state as well as 85 foreign countries, and has the highest number of National Merit Scholars per capita of any public institution in the United States.
As the outreach arm of The University of Oklahoma, the College of Continuing Education (CCE) is nationally recognized for its pioneering efforts in continuing education. The College extends the educational resources of the University through more than 30 different program formats. Annually, CCE offers more than 2,000 courses and activities to some 150,000 non-traditional learners in Oklahoma and in locations all over the world.
The Center for Independent and Distance Learning (CIDL), as part of the CCE family, provides educational options through interactive television (ITV), televised instruction, and independent study. The Independent Study Department has been offering distance learning courses since 1910 and is ranked as one of the largest programs in the country. Today, over 140 college and 100 high school courses are available through print-based and online delivery to students around the world.
In 2000, CIDL developed the OU High School diploma program that students can complete from a distance. All of our high school courses comply with the approved curriculum of Oklahoma schools and are assigned the same credit as courses offered in traditional high school classrooms.
